8-bit Mystique - One Week One Sound #8

Hello, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the eighth (and third-to-last) issue of this project which explores the potential of sound synthesis.

Last night I recreated a sound that came to my mind out of nowhere. Apparently, my wish of creating sounds with a precise pattern flew away, but I can't stop because of this.

So.

My weapon of choice?
Massive, duh.

I used some classic saw wave, a little detuned against each other. Routed them to Filter 2, and used a bitcrusher to give that distorted, raw background sound.
Then I took a Dirty PWM wave and routed it to Filter 1, and with the help of a stepper and a performer I modified the behaviour of pitch and amplitude respectively.

Finally, I macroed the two filters' mix and some other stuff, and here you are.

Mood Swings - One Week One Sound #7

Hi everyone!
After a week of holidays, here we are again with another sound created for my project, which is coming to end after the tenth sound will be created.
Then, my intention is to put my efforts together and create a track with as many sounds as I can.

Now, for the sound. This time my weapon of choice is the old buddy Massive, set up with a simple saw wave sound as first oscillator and two particular waves for the second and the third oscillator: Groan III and Lunacy.

I then used a performer and some envelopes to regulate the volume, and set the two filters to work in parallel, in order to change the filters with the help of a macro knob.
This knob regulates the second and the third oscillators' amplitude, to exclude one or another when the knob is turned up or down.

And here it is, the demo, as usual.
Enjoy!

Marching LFO - One Week One Sound #6

And here we are again, with another instance of my project started six weeks ago.
I think I'll stop to the tenth sound I'll create for this project, and then I'll figure out if there's a chance to some of them, if not all.

Now, about the sound.
This week I listened to InsideInfo's "Conformity" for the first time, and it was not the main bassline to impress me, but another sound I found in several neurofunk tracks. So, I tried to reproduce it on Massive, but at a certain point it all went full random.

I decided then to exploit this randomness, and added some tricks and goods from the Massive modules. A stepper regulates the LP filter LFO rate, and an envelope has been added to the ring modulation applied to the first oscillator. I also macroed the intensity and the FX, making the sound change completely and giving it some sort of "didgeridoo-ish" feeling.

This is the result.

909 Claw - One Week One Sound #5

Hello everybody!
This is the fifth installment of my One Week One Sound project, in which I experiment several sound synthesis techniques and put my efforts into a one-minute demo.

This time I was wondering what image resynthesis could give to me, so I fired up FL Studio and loaded Harmor, an extraordinary tool to manipulate images and other sound samples.

The sound I chose to reprocess is a classical 909 kick, kindly offered by the basic FL Studio sound pack. Then the manipulation started.

I doubled the sound with its octave below, applied some distortion and chorus, and automated the harmonizer, which lets you create chords or double the sound once again.

Then I started moving the knobs to find the cutting/looping point for the sample. I slowed down the playback, and found a way to "navigate" through the soundwave, enabling me to reproduce a piece of sample and eventually going backwards and stopping in a certain point.

What I obtained is a grinding sound, like an electronic scratch, ideal for some darkstep tunes.

I added some external FX too, besides those provided by Harmor: some more chorus, some more distortion and a transient shaper to give more power to the medium frequencies.

This is the result. Hope you like it!

Back In Da Ol' Days - One Week One Sound #4

Hello ev'body, this is my new post for the One Week One Sound Project.

This time I wanted to test a simple yet powerful synth from the FL Studio bundle instruments, thought for the mobile devices but perfectly working on desktop: MiniSynth.

I chose a blend of a saw wave included in the MiniSynth, editing something here and there, as usual. I then added some distortion, a bit of bitcrushing and an LFO, obtaining a sound which remembers Daft Punk's "Technologic" lead sound.

This time I tried to experiment something in the mixing process, too, by compressing the kick and the clap, and sidechaining my experiment and the bassline with the kick (just a sine oscillator that doubles it), to give a pretty housey touch.
I also tried to give more space in the mix by enhancing the stereo image on the lead and the hihats.

Enjoy!

Melted Rain - One Week One Sound #3

Hello, and welcome to the third installment of my personal Project, One Week One Sound.
This time I tried to focus to the typical sounds from the '80s sci-fi movies, and to shape my sound I chose one of the synths included in FL Studio: Sawer.

It's a bit more than a classic synth: it has some interesting features, such as the sub-bass and a versatile in-built LFO, which can be routed to almost any section in Sawer.

Sawer's main oscillator is, well, a saw. And the sub-saw is really useful to add some power, alongside with the unison voices, which enrich the patch.
To give more air to the sound, I set the sub bass to -2 octaves and the sync frequency to +2 octaves.

I used an envelope controller to record the cutoff, just for self-teaching purposes.
Unfortunately Sawer doesn't have in-built FX, so I quickly used a Chorus and a Reverb bundled in FL Studio, without messing around too much.
This is the result:

Gestalt - One Week One Sound #2

This time I wanted to create a pad with a wonderful VST included in my DAW of choice: Sytrus.

Sytrus is a FM synthesizer: it operates with a matrix of operators that can interact with each other, and every waveform can be controlled separately and independently.

So, I fired up FL Studio and started playing with the operators, until I found a sound that satisfied me.

Then I added some filters and some FX, including a noise operator, edited the envelopes and the XY controller modulation, and that's it!
